The official national governing body of authentic I.T.F. Taekwon-Do in South Africa
Taekwon-Do South Africa (TSA) proudly represents the International Taekwon-Do Federation (I.T.F.), under the leadership of Grand Master Choi Jung Hwa, IX Dan—the son of Taekwon-Do’s founder, General Choi Hong Hi. In 2001, GM Choi was officially elected by the original I.T.F. to carry on his father’s legacy. He is supported by the founder’s family, and the I.T.F. is headquartered in London, England.
About the I.T.F.
Originating in South Korea, Taekwon-Do is now a global martial art practiced and respected worldwide—from its roots in Korea to its vibrant presence here in South Africa. The I.T.F. continues to uphold the traditional values and teachings of General Choi, promoting authentic Taekwon-Do through structured technique, discipline, and philosophy.
Our Mission in South Africa
TSA was established in January 2004, following the passing of General Choi. Our goal was to align with the I.T.F. branch led by GM Choi Jung Hwa, whom we believe represents the truest continuation of the founder’s vision. This decision was guided by a commitment to staying as close to the original source of Taekwon-Do as possible.
Since its founding in 1955, Taekwon-Do has been spread across the globe by the General and his pioneering students. Its popularity grew rapidly—unlike any other martial art before or since. While various organizations have branched off, borrowing the name, few have preserved the pure techniques of the original Taekwon-Do founder. Hence sparking wildly different styles all under the banner of Taekwondo.
Being close to the source of authentic Taekwon-Do means receiving truly well-rounded training. Unlike many modern groups that focus narrowly on the sport aspect, I.T.F. Taekwon-Do encompasses the full spectrum: from its intense military origins to its current form, incorporating effective self-defence, traditional patterns, sport competition, and mental discipline. It remains a comprehensive hand-to-hand martial art.
Taekwon-Do South Africa is proudly led by Master Norman Magua, VII Dan (President). His instructor and mentor, Grand Master Trevor Nicholls, IX Dan, serves as Vice President of the I.T.F. and President of the UKITF Taekwon-Do Association.
